In this session, discover how children’s books can be used as a meaningful context to explore mathematical and numeracy concepts within the CfE framework.

Some children report that they find learning maths boring, but this might be because the subject is taught in an abstract way that children struggle to relate to. Children’s books often embed mathematics/numeracy in the images and written text, demonstrating how integral they are to everyday life. These books can prove an engaging hook for an interesting maths lesson or sequence of lessons. This research-informed session will take you through some text recommendations for Early and First Level; we'll also share some adaptable activity ideas for use alongside the texts, and demonstrate how our Read Write Count picturebooks can facilitate this approach.

All attendees will have the opportunity to receive a small bundle of books and an exclusive learning resource to support connecting maths with stories, courtesy of the Read Write Count programme.

This session is suitable for primary school staff and student primary teachers. It will be held as a meeting on Microsoft Teams, with meeting details and a link to access the session emailed close to the event. For the best experience, we recommend joining the webinar using the Microsoft Teams app rather than using the browser.
