Description

This full day conference for primary school teachers and librarians, in our popular Reading for pleasure series, will explore strategies to engage young people with reading, putting books at the heart of learning

The day will focus on inspiring children to read for pleasure, visual literacy, reading choices including non-fiction, being creative with books, multilingual approaches and reading strategies that raise attainment. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to share good practice.

Emily Gravett, author of Wolves, Little Mouse’s Big Book of FearsBlue ChameleonWolf Won’t Bite!, Again! and Tidy and twice winner of the Kate Greenaway prize, will discuss writing and illustrating books for younger readers. Author and poet MG Leonard will discuss creating the first in her trilogy Beetle Boy and writing for children.

Prue Goodwin, lecturer in literacy and children’s books, will discuss strategies to get children reading, learning and achieving. There will be good practice workshops from speakers, teachers and educational organisations including Free Word, Tower Hamlets Library Service and Sally Kindberg

The day will be chaired by Julia Eccleshare, Guardian children’s books editor.

 The conference will explore:

  • Resources, ideas and tips that can be used in the classroom.
