About Michael Fowler BA, MA

We’re pleased to welcome Michael Fowler, a seasoned leader in international relations, business development, and cross-cultural engagement, to this edition of the R.E.A.L Fireside Chat Series.

Michael’s global journey began at West Point, followed by a degree in Chinese from the University of Hawaii, and a master’s in International Relations (Political Economy) from Sophia University Graduate School in Tokyo. His academic background, combined with lived experience across Asia, has shaped a deep understanding of global markets and diplomacy.

As Executive Director of the World Trade Center Tacoma, Michael plays a pivotal role in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in accessing and navigating Asian and international markets. His entrepreneurial insight stems from his time as Co-Founder of Tokyo-based JDB Network Co Ltd, where he gained firsthand experience in cross-border trade and market entry strategies.

Fluent in Japanese, Chinese, and English, Michael is a strong advocate for effective cross-cultural communication, he has engaged for many years in community initiatives through the World Affairs Council Tacoma, the Kitsap Sailing Foundation, as well as by recently teaching International Marketing at the University of Washington Tacoma Milgard School of Business.

With a passion for international affairs, sailing, and history, Michael brings a well-rounded and thoughtful perspective to the conversation on global business, diplomacy, and community leadership.
