Event description
Dementia NI invites you to a special event in conjunction with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

About this Event

Now in its 4th year, ‘Learning from those who live with dementia’, is a unique event brought to life as Dementia NI members share real-life experiences of living with dementia to help explain what support they need, in the hope that everyone will become more understanding and accepting of the symptoms of dementia.

Their aim: To challenge associated negative assumptions in the hope that others will be more accepting, tolerant of the symptoms, and helpful towards people living with the condition.

----------------------------------------------------------

What are Dementia NI Awareness Sessions?

Dementia NI Awareness Sessions are jointly delivered by staff and members and are tailored to meet groups’ and organisations’ requirements.

These unique sessions are brought to life as members share real-life experiences of living with dementia and help explain what support they need, in the hope that everyone will become more understanding and accepting of the symptoms of dementia.

--------------------------------

This event is an opportunity for the citizens of Lisburn & Castlereagh to learn from people who live with dementia in Northern Ireland.

Dementia NI members will confront the assumptions of dementia by sharing their experiences and telling real-life stories.

The event aims to raise the awareness of dementia, and challenge the stigma of the condition. Dementia NI members intend to demonstrate how the condition is not a natural part of aging, and illustrate how symptoms go beyond memory loss by explaining how different types of dementia can affect people in different ways.

Dementia NI members will explain how they came to receive to their diagnosis, the signs to look out for, give their opinions on the importance of an early diagnosis and whether a person has a right to know their diagnosis.

The event will educate Lisburn & Castlereagh citizens on how to communicate better with people living with dementia, and demonstrate to the community how with the correct support and services, people can still live well after a diagnosis.

The event is free of charge and lunch will be provided.*

Use of images, video and sound recordings

Dementia NI may take photographs/video/sound recordings at this event for use in printed and electronic media, including the internet, for promotional purposes and for addition to Dementia NI’s Archive.

*Light lunch will be provided from 11.30am. Please advise of any dietary requirements.

Local charity Dementia NI is a membership organisation specifically for people living with dementia. Dementia NI was incorporated as a company on the 15th January 2015 by five people living with dementia, who wanted to ensure that the voice of people living with dementia is at the core of policy, practice and service delivery across NI. Members use their experiences and opinions to make a difference in the services and support provided to them to better meet their individual needs and challenge the stigma of dementia.
