Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and genomics will deliver more accurate diagnoses and personalised treatments, and potentially transform the NHS and self-care. Technology is now here that can gather life, health and medical data through apps, wearables, digestibles, home-based devices and sensors, and analysed using sophisticated machine algorithms to provide real-time, actionable analytics.

This event will focus on taking the results of the national survey run by the AHSN AI Initiative and published in a report ‘Accelerating Artificial Intelligence in health and care: results from a state of the nation survey’ to the next stage - debating the immediate and longer-term solutions necessary from an organisational, funding and policy perspective to build a sustainable ecosystem for the NHS to deliver better health for people in the UK.

The event will also mark the launch of the interactive map and directory of all organisations who participated in the survey and who have been joining since the survey closed as members of the AHSN AI Initiative ecosystem.

The event will focus on the solutions needed to address critical challenges revealed by the survey, including:

Need for a more agile regulatory process, and how the ‘Code of Conduct’ for Digital Health Innovations and Intelligence Algorithms provides guidance for the sector
Call for urgent attention to data infrastructure and interoperability, including making use of open standards, and review of commercial arrangements to ensure the value of data is being recognised and distributed appropriately, and how they can support the SME sector post-Brexit
Imperative for health care professionals to be engaged and persuaded to use AI- and how the Topol review will address workforce education and training needs
Need for grounding AI’s use in real problems as expressed by citizens, carers and healthcare professionals; and the role of ethics and a narrative that will build and preserve public trust

SITRA shares their experience and perspective on open data ecosystems through their work on IHAN (International Human Account Network), a human driven data economy involving the creation of a method for data exchange and set up of European level rules and guidelines for ethical use of data. SITRA is working with Estonia on two data exchange layer pilot to test the suitability of Estonia’s X-Road solution for the organisation and provision of social and healthcare services.
