About this Event

Join us at the Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library on Friday 22nd November, between 12 and 2pm, for the launch of Searching the Shadows, a new publication documenting the artwork of Rebecca Chesney. Published by In Certain Places, the book looks at Chesney’s installations, exhibitions, objects, drawings and maps from 2000 to 2019. Signed copies will be available to buy for the special price of £20 (RRP £22) and works by the artist held in the Harris’ collection will be exhibited for view.

An additional publication, Practising Place: Creative and Critical Reflections on Place, will also be available to purchase for £10 (RRP £15). Featuring a foreword by Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid, Practising Place explores our relationship with place through a collection of co-authored texts, creative projects and conversations between artists and academics, including a visual essay by Rebecca Chesney and curator and art historian Rosemary Shirley.

About Searching the Shadows:

Chesney’s practice examines our complex relationship with the natural world by engaging with issues of culture, politics and power. Air pollution, water quality, invasive plant species, weeds, bees, extreme weather, rising sea level and land ownership are all subjects included in the book. It will appeal to ecologists, historians, anthropologists, town planners, and artists alike, as well as those interested in landscape, sustainability, art in public spaces, geography, botany and myth making. Click here to watch a video of Rebecca Chesney talking about her work with Rosemary Shirley.

This beautiful publication with 245 colour photographs and illustrations features written contributions from Richard Mabey, Rosemary Shirley, Elaine Speight, Colm Bowe, Gail Bell, Owen Mountford and a foreword by Clarissa Corfe.

It includes her work with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Brontë Parsonage Museum, The Lowry, Nirox Sculpture Park, Peak, Triangle Network, Bluecoat Gallery, Newlyn Art Gallery, Montalvo, Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Springhornhof, In Certain Places, Bolton Museum, Museo Casa Rurale di Carcente and Grizedale Arts.
