Description

Rebellion and Riots: Viking Settlement in North West England and Resistance to Anglo-Saxon Royal Power

With Dr Clare Downham

In the late 870s much of England had been conquered by Vikings, and only one Anglo-Saxon kingdom, Wessex, retained its royal line. In the early tenth century, the rulers of Wessex sought to extend their control in the North West of England, opposed by Viking settlers in the Wirral and the Viking kingdoms of Dublin and Northumbria.
