PRODUCTIVE WORKFLOWS IN GENERAL PRACTICE

Programme aims & objectives

On completion of this programme, participants will:

• Critically review the service provision and particularly work flows

• Examine potential efficiencies

• Understand stakeholder needs more effectively

• Apply a range of QI and workflow tools and techniques to service delivery in their own organisations

• Implement the necessary changes within their teams

• Handle the communication impacts

SESSION ONE: INTRODUCTIONS

  • Brief summary of the course and its objectives

  • Introduction to the course tutor

  • Individual introductions by course members

  • Administration details

SESSION TWO: LOOKING AT WORKFLOW & TIME USAGE

  • What areas could we target to identify improvements in workflow?

  • Understanding the cost of time in transactions and service delivery

  • Where does our time go? – Feedback from personal time logs

  • What would improvement look like? – Rich pictures/mind mapping

SESSION THREE IDENTIFYING WORKFLOW IMPROVEMENTS

  • Understanding the principles of workflow improvement and value process mapping.

SESSION FOUR TOOLS & TECHNIQUES FOR EFFECTIVE WORKFLOW

  • Basics of Kaizen and TQM, the Kano approach

  • Value process mapping

  • Robustification & run- time charts

  • Blue Ocean and workflow improvements

SESSION FIVE IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES – ACTION PLANNING

  • What changes can we make to our workflows and processes?

  • What issues does the implementation raise?

  • How can we manage the change?

  • With our teams?

  • With patients and other stakeholders?

  • What communication issues are there?

  • What legal and human resource issues are there?

Participants work through and map out the impacts with all stakeholders and formulate an action plan.
