Recognising and Addressing Disguised Compliance with Hard to Engage Families

Facilitated by Craig Wilkinson & Catherine Mullin, Independent Trainers, Solutions in Mind

“Parents feel disempowered and helpless in situations they can’t control and if unable to actively participate in the assessment process this can lead to hostility to professionals and resistance to working co-operatively or they may superficially become compliant: “playing the game”(Lefevre, The Carrot or the Stick, (ed) Calder, 2001)

During this one day workshop, participants will be facilitated to share and reflect on their practice and develop strategies to cultivate collaborative relationships and counteract resistance and disguised compliance.

This interactive practice development workshop will cover the consider issues and dilemmas often faced by child care and protection practitioners including;

    •  What prevents engagement and why I am encountering resistance?
    • How much resistance is normal to anticipate and what is the capacity for change?
    • How can I engage the “un-engageable” and facilitate the process of change?
    • What about those families who are compliant but nothing seems to happen?
    • What strategies will enhance safety?
    • How can we set measurable and effective goals?

Target Audience

 This workshop will be of interest to practitioners at all levels of experience working with families. It is suitable for frontline staff as well as those who provide line manager support and supervision to staff. This workshop is specifically targeted at staff within Services for Children Young People and Families.
