Reconnect - express yourself series - painting

Expressive yourself series: Expressive Painting

Magnetic Ideals are excited to announce this workshop as part of a free training and skills sessions programme to develop new skills and help build community through creativity and confidence building. The programme is here to help you Reconnect with your life and purpose, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you!

What is expressive painting?

Expressionism is a style of art in which we engage with a topic in terms of emotions, mark making and exploratory engagement rather than focusing on making things realistic. It is about thinking and feeling, making marks and playing with colour, rather than simply observing and representing. There is no right or wrong, and expressive painting is a format you can explore freely whether you have experience in art or not, it should be fun, freeing and liberating!

Creating abstract art intuitively provides important benefits to our mental health. Engaging in non-representational, intuitive painting is a safe, secure, and at times therapeutic way to explore our inner worlds, express ourselves, and develop a healthier understanding of who we are and what we need. Spontaneously choosing colours and shapes, rather than words, to express feelings provides a sense of security and anonymity. Tools like expressive art can help people access and express both difficult and positive feelings in ways we might otherwise find difficult.

This workshop is run by experienced facilitator Kirsty Lumm please contact kirsty.artsforlife@gmail.com if you have any queries.

The event is run by Magnetic Ideals and Arts for Life, it is taking place at the Justlife Hub, which is wheelchair accessible.

Magnetic Ideals are a collective of self-employed artists, researchers and activists running projects and providing support, consultancy, research and training, for organisations and individuals working in the arts for community interest and for social sustainability. We run projects that use creative and artistic ways of bringing communities together to create social change, campaign for social justice and find ways of locally and nationally challenging the climate crisis. Regarding activist work, we have provided specialist consulting and training for Students’ Unions and Research Students, and other campaigning bodies, including coaching, setting up student-led research teams, officer training, campaign support, events management, research and analysis, and running workshops for activists on collective care.
