About this event

Sound is central to how we perceive environmental changes; it shapes our memories and allows us to connect with our surroundings. It can also reveal biodiversity health and ecological changes.

In the third event of this series, we will explore the seasonal sounds of the coast as summer winds to a close. Once again, we will make our own field recordings to document these sounds for future preservation.

In this late summer evening session, we will explore the sounds of the evening and discuss how changes to the local area can be felt through what can, or cannot, be heard. This will include group discussions, as well as a walk around Torry Battery listening for the sounds of birds and other wildlife. Participants will also be able to make recordings of the sounds that we encounter, using field recorders and a hydrophone. Dr Rebecca Macklin and Dr Andrew Whitehouse from the University of Aberdeen will lead this session as part of their project, Listening to North Sea Multispecies Communities in Transition and recordings will be preserved in the Elphinstone Institute archives. Local bird expert Mark Lewis will also be joining us.

All are welcome to join in the session. We are particularly keen to include people that live in the area or are familiar with the local environment.

Weather permitting, we hope to spend time walking and listening outside, so please dress for the weather! This is part of a research project funded the University of Aberdeen, in partnership with the Elphinstone Institute.
