About this event

  • Event lasts 10 days 5 hours

RecRock is running a multi day music project for young people aged 12-18 years old who have an interest in music. We are looking for singers, songwriters, drummers, guitarists, keyboards, anyone who wants to make friends and improve their music skills.

We are focussing on digital skills as part of the project. The young people will learn how to use a sound desk, how to use digital photography and social media as well as rehearsing in bands.

No experience is necessary, anyone can attend the only thing required is a can do attitude. Our courses are ideal for young people who want to improve their confidence, and perform on stage for the first time. We are particularly keen to work with people who are suffering from social isolation and want to make new friends.

We will be looking at songwriting, exploring themes of mental health. In previous projects we have put on a concert and made music videos. The projects are always led by the young people on the courses, so please come with any creative ideas.

Please get in touch to book your place on the course as availability is limited. If you are older than 18 and want to volunteer, please get in touch. The activities we are running are suitable for children in comprehensive school.

There will be a showcase event on the weekend of the Big Cheese festival, details tbc.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be able to sing/play already?

No! Absolutely not, our courses are designed for complete beginners. It's all about trying something for the first time.

What if I'm shy or nervous?

Don't worry, we won't make you do anything you don't want to. You can just take part in songwriting if you want and not perform anything. We are very good at making people feel welcome and good at helping you get into music for the first time.

Do I need to bring my instruments?

If you have any guitars, or drumsticks etc bring them along, but we have everything you need.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes of course, the group we work with are really friendly however so hope you can make friends while you're there.

From March 2021, RecRock will launch their online project ‘My Creative Brain’, which aims to deliver a free on-line series of activities focusing on creativity and wellbeing. The 6 sessions will then culminate in an online festival, which will include a showcase of the all creative work participants have developed.

Nearly a year into the pandemic and several lockdowns later, the increased isolation has had a huge impact on mental health. Through ‘My Creative Brain’, it is hoped that people can increase confidence, re-build new and existing networks, and develop new creative skills.

Project leader Dan Fitzgerald explains, “Throughout the six weeks, we will talk to a range of guests who will offer a creative activity to follow at home. We've got writers, musicians, visual artists and many more. These sessions will give the viewer an insight into how the guest started out, a number of tips on creativity from different fields, and what kinds of things they've been doing to improve their lockdown and wellbeing.”

The project is aimed at anyone who needs a creative lift: creatives, the unemployed, those with confidence issues, people with an interest in wellbeing and mental health or who have worked in creative industries but are currently out of work due to the pandemic.
