Recruiting safely and fairly: Employing ex-offenders to capture talent

Employers increasingly report that they struggle to find people with the right talent, skills, abilities, motivation or mindset to fill their vacancies. There are more than 10 million people in the UK with a criminal record – which equates to more than 20% of the working population – yet many employers tend to be overcautious about offering them paid work or voluntary opportunities. Yet those who have employed people with offending histories report having extremely positive experiences.
Dominic Headley, Legal Officer at the social justice charity Nacro, will deliver an informative, interactive session which will detail how the Jobcentre Plus (JCP) employer offer can support your business to confidently recruit from this talent pool of ex-offenders.
The session will help employers to:
• Understand their rights and responsibilities around recruiting safely and fairly
• Ensure that they are able to confidently recruit the best individuals for their business from this large talent pool
• Manage and mitigate any potential risks involved
• Navigate the complex area of dealing with criminal record disclosures
The session will commence with an introduction from Hazel Holmes from hosts DWP, and also include information about JCP’s employment offer and the upskilling of jobseekers.
Dominic will also talk about how businesses can get involved in the Aeneid Project, a groundbreaking social change programme.
