These courses are provided free for Derbyshire (UK) residents, you will need to provide a valid Derbyshire based home address.

About this event

Treat yourself to a creative day out. Create an individual and personal piece of textile art that can be given as a gift or kept to record your use of different materials and techniques.

Approximate course length:

Anyone who would like to have a go at making an original piece of textile art. Suitable for beginners and those with previous stitching experience.

• sources of inspiration

• layering a range of different textile materials

• paint effects on fabric

• collage

• uses of a range of different textile art materials such as Lutradur, Tyvek, Bondaweb, Dissolvable Fabric, Silk Carrier Rods, Net

• hand and/or machine embroidery.

• finishing and edging your work

• next steps in stitch

This course will be delivered remotely via Zoom so you will be part of a live class, with a tutor, but with everyone doing the lessons at their own home.

You will be given the support you require for your individual development. There are no exams or formal assessments.

There will be chance to ask questions and put what you have learned into practice. Your tutor will give you feedback during the course and you will be able to self-assess.

Additional costs and what to prepare:

This course is offered free of charge. You will need:

• Some threads and cotton fabric (you can use scraps of fabric and old clothes you already have)

• Lutradur, Tyvek, Dissolvable Fabric, Silk Carrier Rods, Net if you wish to learn to use these

• paints or fabric pencils

• Bondaweb

• An embroidery needle

• A tailor’s chalk or an air/heat erasable fabric pen.

• A large postcard size piece of interfacing or stabiliser

• A photo or image that you are using for inspiration – a favourite place maybe, even of your garden?

If you don’t already have these you may choose to purchase a kit with everything you need to make one/ two of these textile postcard designs from the tutor (available after Easter) - https://www.helenmoyesdesigns.com/shop

You will need either a smart phone, tablet, laptop or other computer with internet access to do the course via a link you will be sent.

If you wish to use free machine embroidery you will need use of a sewing machine.

If you are not confident setting up and using a sewing machine, you may want to attend our free ‘Find Your Way Around Your Sewing Machine’ workshop on 19 April

If you are not confident in setting the machine up for free machine embroidery, you may want to attend our free ‘Introduction to Free Machine Embroidery’ on 7 June

These are both available to book on our Eventbrite Page from 22 March

You will need a pen and paper, laptop or tablet so that you can make your own notes.

Progression from this course:

You may wish to progress to some of our other online art and craft courses this summer, such as ‘Coiled basketry’, ‘Recycling Crafts – Jewellery’. Alternatively you may want to come on one of our face-to-face craft courses held at the Derbyshire Eco Centre in July. See our Eventbrite page for details.

We are Derbyshire County Council's Adult Community Education Service; we deliver a range of courses and education provision.

Welcome to our Summer 2021 programme of FREE Learning for Leisure courses provided for Derbyshire residents. This term we are offering a range of online and in person, centre-based courses.

The Summer 2021 programme of FREE courses is available to book from 9am on Monday 22 March 2021.
