Recycling from the Dustbin of History: A 'Curious Histories' Talk
Event Information
About this event
Every age generates easily-consumed, throwaway knick-knacks that their creators assumed would not last long. We often call this material ephemera: novelty items, calling cards, tickets, postcards, and so on. Although sometimes prized by collectors, often these items are overlooked as fabulous sources in their own right for social and community history. Concentrating mainly on postcards, popular song, and advertisements, Dr Stuart Mitchell's talk will range from the late nineteenth century through to the Second World War, picking up a few snippets and gewgaws from the past and looking at some of the evidence they might reveal. St. John's church, by the floral clock in Hove, provides the handsome venue for the Curious Histories lecture series. All the events are free to attend, with a retiring collection for charity. Ample refreshment will be provided at our bijou donation bar, serving both alcoholic and soft drinks, which will take both cash and cards. Doors are at 6.30pm and the talk begins at 7pm.
