What is a Backyard Ultra?

A backyard ultra is an endurance race where participants must complete a 6.706 km (4.167 mi) loop every hour, on the hour. The race continues until only one runner remains, making them the winner and the only official finisher.

Where is the Red On Backyard Ultra held?

Accepted Answer

The event takes place in the military camp of Altcar, Liverpool. The entire race is contained within the camp, providing a controlled yet challenging environment.

Question 4

Is the route marked?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the course is fully marked and marshalled to ensure runners stay on track throughout the event.

Question 5

How long does the race last?

Accepted Answer

There is no set end time. The race continues as long as multiple runners can complete each loop within the 1-hour time limit.

Question 6

What happens if I don’t finish a loop in time?

Accepted Answer

If you fail to complete a loop within the allotted hour, you are eliminated from the race and marked as "DNF" (Did Not Finish).

Question 7

Can I take breaks?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Any time remaining after completing a loop can be used for rest, eating, or recovery. However, all runners must be at the start line for the next loop when the hour begins.

Will there be aid stations?

Accepted Answer

Runners must be largely self-sufficient, but you will be provided a marked out, designated base area where you can store and access your own food, drinks, and gear between loops. Food venders and drinks venders will be in the admin area.

Question 9

Can I have a support crew?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Crews are allowed to assist runners between loops in the designated rest area. However, they cannot run with you or provide assistance on the course.

Question 10

What should I bring?

Accepted Answer

Recommended gear includes but is not limited to:

Running kit suited for varying weather conditions
Nutrition & hydration for extended endurance efforts
Headlamp & spare batteries (for night running)
Camping gear or chair for rest breaks
Extra socks, shoes, and warm clothing

Question 11

If I stop can I leave whenever?

Accepted Answer

There will be escorted exits from the camp every 3 hours. If you wish to leave the event you must leave with one of the escorts. This will be communicated on the day.
