Dealing with The Housing Crisis in London

Redbridge Borough has just revealed ambitious plans for tackling the shortage of affordable housing within the Borough and improving the quality of current stock of housing.

On Monday 17 July 2017, Cabinet agreed the Council’s five year housing strategy which aims to see 1,000 affordable homes built in this period.

Ambitious plans focus on creating successful neighbourhoods by providing high quality homes that people want to live in and creating places where people want to stay.

The 2017 to 2022 strategy focuses on four main themes to tackle the borough’s housing issues and improve the quality and quantity of homes.

These are:

  • Increasing housing supply

  • Meeting housing need

  • Working with Landlords to improve the private rented sector

  • Being an excellent Landlord

Planned actions include:

  • Increasing the supply of housing and creating ‘genuinely affordable’ homes on Council-owned sites

  • Reviewing the Housing Allocations Scheme and strengthening the Housing Needs Service to offer more choice and support and prevent homelessness,

  • Reducing the use of bed and breakfast accommodation

  • Extending private sector property licensing

  • Building on relationships with tenants and leaseholders to create an excellent service

Leader of the Council, Councillor Jas Athwal said, “We know that housing has a huge effect on the lives of our residents, which is why we have focused on increasing the number of new homes and reducing the risk of homelessness.

“By working across sectors to raise the quality and quantity of homes we will be in the best position to deal with the worst of the housing crisis. Overall, we aim to see almost 17,000 new homes built in this Borough, a vision which is included in our Redbridge Local Plan 2015-2030. Work has already begun on a programme that will see 250 new council homes built before 2020”

Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Farah Hussain said, “The Council has adopted new approaches and set an ambitious plan to tackle the lack of available and affordable housing. Attaining these targets will help improve the choice and opportunities for many more residents.”
