Event description

Description

The launch of a brand new society at Northwestern University is imminent.

Scientific Assemblies For Everyone (SAFE) is on a mission to create community conversations informed by science and it will be launched, at lunchtime, on 15th October 2019.

People make decisions based on the stories they tell themselves. Their confidence is often based on the coherence of the story, rather than the quality of the evidence. Deliberations are gatherings in which new stories are created. Sharing many points of view, and discussing them in an open and honest way, generates the opportunity for less helpful stories to be laid to rest.

During this event we will hear from deliberation expert Dr Joseph Hoereth (Director of the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement at UIC) who will tell us what deliberation is and why it is increasingly relevant in today's world.

We will also hear a brief introduction to SAFE from its founder member, Dr Chris Forman. He will explain how deliberations provide an opportunity for scientists to help everyday people create new narratives. These short talks will be followed by a brief Q & A session after which we will try out a short deliberation for ourselves by discussing—over pizza—the topic:

"What would society be like if everyone's voice was actually heard?"

So come along, and find out for yourself how we are going to Rediscover Democracy together.

Admission is free but please register so we can order the right amount of food. The event will last no longer than 90 minutes, and the discussion (last 45mins) is optional for those that wish to partake.

15th October 12h00. TGS Commons.
