Event description

Description

Brief overview of trip

This two-week, hands-on experience in Indonesia will provide individuals with a unique learning opportunity and a chance to gain practical experience and a valuable insight into humanitarian response. By the end of the fortnight, participants will be more aware of whether they wish to continue with further and more formal training or not.

What will I gain by attending this trip?

Indonesia is a country which is regularly in the news due to its exposure to natural disasters. Due to its location and topography it is exposed a huge range of natural disasters. Typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions regularly strike the Indonesian Islands which have a direct impact on people’s lives as well as leading to flooding, landslides, tsunamis and mudflows. Indonesians have developed schemes and systems to mitigate the risks from such disasters and to cater for people’s needs when the worst does happen.

This field experience trip is aimed primarily at those potentially interested in working in the disaster relief sector. will be run by RedR Indonesia with support from Dr Mark Errington and Dr Robert Hodgson who both have practical experience of working in disaster areas around the world.

The experience will include living in field situations within local communities, practical exercises and meetings with many different actors in humanitarian relief from village level community groups, to government agencies, individuals with experience of disaster relief work and Shelter Cluster Coordinator.

Participants who would like to continue on the road to a humanitarian career will get suggestions on further steps they may take in applying for training to make them suitable for a field role.

Experience Objectives

- To give people interested in disaster response work practical field experience to see if it is really for them.

- To experience living in challenging conditions and working directly with those who have lived through disasters and those who help communities to rebuild following disasters.

- To help the participants appreciate that disaster relief work is very complex and while they might have relevant backgrounds they will require further specialist training before they can be impactful in the field

- To give participants authentic and real experiences of field work that they can use in applying for humanitarian courses or jobs

Who will be facilitating the event?

The trip leaders will be Mark Errington (RedR SW Group member and ShelterBox volunteer), Robert Hodgson (former RedR UK Chair and current RedR International Co-ordinator), Benny Usdianto (RedR Indonesia Board Chair) and Rinto Adriono (RedR Indonesia CEO).

Trip Structure:

The trip will start and finish at the guesthouse and travel will be within East Java. The facilitators of the trip want to avoid providing a full itinerary as it is subject to change and not knowing what is going to happen is the nature of disaster work. Not everyone will stay at the guesthouse and those that do will only stay for a night or two so please be aware of this before purchasing your ticket.
