Event description

Description

At the workshop parents will gain an understanding of anxiety, resilience and emotional coping. They will develop practical techniques and strategies which they can apply to the circumstances and situations that they face on a daily basis. The tools taught at the workshop are simple to use and don’t take much time.

Why is it important? Parents with children on the Autistic Spectrum are notoriously bad at taking care of themselves. They give everything they have to their children to the point of breaking. As noble as fighting for their children is, this is a recipe for disaster in the long term. Often parents are stressed, exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally depleted, and many are frequently sick, or on the verge of being sick.

It is important for parents to heal. Parents who themselves are not healthy, will not be able to provide the best care their children. If parents cannot learn to care for themselves, then they will not be able to give their children everything they can.

The Workshop objectives are to enable participants to:

  • Improve their understanding of anxiety, resilience and emotional coping
  • Develop understanding of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
  • Understand the relationship between parental stress and coping with a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Understand how to administer EFT to yourself to reduce anxiety and improve coping.
  • Develop skills and techniques to support their children and reduce their anxiety through the use of EFT.

The Empower project is a Big Lottery funded initiative through the Reaching Out Supporting Families Programme which support Families across Mid Ulster and Antrim & Newtownabbey Council areas. The focus of the project is to support children under 12 with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, their parents and the wider family circle to enhance confidence and learn together to develop skills to support their children.
