Description

Reminder for members:

This is being sent to members before non-members hear about it. So jump in and book now.

The medieval church of St John the Baptist, Reedham, Norfolk is built of re-used Roman brick and stone, similar to that used in the Roman fort at Brancaster and derived from sources in the north-west of the county. Over the years there has been much speculation about the character and location of the Roman building which was robbed for the construction of the church. Following geophysical survey, excavation in 2016 and 2017 confirmed the church itself to be the location and the character and scale of the surviving remains suggest an official building such as a fortlet or watch tower. The function and purpose of the Reedham fortlet will be considered against the background of other mid-to-late Roman military installations in East Anglia including of course Venta Icenorum.
