Reels on Edits: Teleprompter School
Overview
A one-hour online session for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and anyone who needs to make short talking-head Reels without spending hours figuring out the tech.
We’ll be working with Nina (@ninamoyano_lifecoachlondon) — a life coach, storyteller, and current member of my Upskill Cohort. One of her tasks this month is to create a workable system for making talking-head, selfie-style Reels with confidence and ease.
She’ll be our case study as we explore the Edits app and its very useful teleprompter tool.
What is the Edits app?
A standalone, free editing app released by Instagram in April 2025 to compete with CapCut. CapCut is still more powerful overall, but Edits is clean, straightforward, and excellent at the features it does offer — especially the teleprompter.
Skill Level
A basic grasp of editing (trim clips, move things around, add text) is useful, but the session will stay beginner-friendly. If you are good at one of the editing apps but want a better overview of what's available this will also suit you.
What we’ll cover
1. Editing tools overview (10 mins)
A practical, simple comparison of:
• Canva
• CapCut
• Premiere (and the wider Adobe suite)
• Instagram’s built-in editor
• Edits
We’ll look specifically at:
• Which app does what
• Which offers the most powerful tools
• Which has the steepest learning curve
• Which is free, which is worth paying for
• Which suits different kinds of creators and businesses
This gives you a clear sense of where Edits sits in the wider landscape.
2. The Edits app (20 mins)
A focused walk-through of:
• How the interface works
• Key functions relevant to talking-head Reels
• Strengths, limitations, and simple workarounds
3. Teleprompter Deep Dive (15 mins)
A practical look at:
• Where to find the teleprompter inside Edits
• How to set it up quickly
• Common glitches that make people think it “doesn’t work”
• How to avoid those glitches
• How to pace yourself while recording
• How to use it so you don’t sound stiff or robotic
• An example workflow using Nina as our case study live.
This is the heart of the session.
4. Q&A and next steps (15 mins)
Time for your questions — technical, practical, workflow-related, or specific to your business.
What you’ll receive afterwards (PDF)
A concise, useful reference you can keep on your phone:
• A comparison checklist (what each app does well + less well)
• Short reviews of Canva, CapCut, Premiere, Instagram, and Edits
• A breakdown of where Edits fits into different workflows
• Step-by-step guidance for the teleprompter function
• Notes on common issues and how to avoid them
