REF and the Sterne Review – What might it mean for you?
In July, the independent review of the Research Excellence Framework – more commonly known as the Stern review - was published. The report proposes a series of changes to the next REF, planned for 2020/21 which could have far-researching consequences for HE pedagogies and practices.
Perhaps the one that will potentially affect us all the most is Recommendation 1: “All research active staff should be returned in the REF” (p.19)
This is the most far-reaching recommendation in the report.
Potentially, this change alone could lead to a less divisive and demoralising assessment process for academic staff –but there is a need for us to begin to discuss and define what is meant by the term “research active”. Unless you are on a teaching only contract the Stern review is going to affect you.
This is an open discussion session so please come along and join in.
Lunch will be provided.
