On 17 June 2020, Oriel College Governors voted on removing the prominent Cecil Rhodes statue from the front of one of their buildings, which shares his name. The decision came after a campaign and protests led by the Rhodes Must Fall 2.0 movement.

As we mark Black History Month, join Temitope Ajileye, DPhil Candidate, Department of Computer Science, and former co-facilitator of the Rhodes Must Fall 2.0 movement and Devika, St Antony’s College BAME Officer, online as they share their insights from their involvement in RMF 2.0.

Organised by Kellogg MCR This event hopes to contribute more perspectives on why tackling figures and issues like Cecil Rhodes are intertwined with Black History and, ultimately, the genuine inclusion of all members of our community.

Speakers

Temitope was born in southern Nigeria, where he spent his first seven years before moving to northern Italy. However, it wasn't before moving to the UK to pursue his master's studies that he started actively engaging with issues of race and historical memory. Temitope is now a final year DPhil student in Computer Science at Wolfson College.

Devika is a second-year MPhil candidate at St Antony’s, studying Modern South Asian Studies. Her research interests are knowledge systems, education policy, postcolonial spaces and identities, Indians writing in English, sexuality and race politics. She is also St Antony’s GCR BAME Officer. She is currently working with the Bodleian Libraries on the archives of the Anti-Apartheid Movement and the Rhodes Must Fall.
