The Academy for Education and Professional Development - Monthly Pedagogy Seminar Series

'Reflective Practice' Thursday 28 September, 1.00 – 2.00p.m., Room 1.006, AV Hill Building

The Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertaken and/or pedagogy literature of interest. Dr Rachel Starkey will lead a discussion on how we teach and support the development of reflective practice in students, particularly healthcare professions’ students.

Reflective practice refers to the process in which practitioners reflect and learn from their own experience in order to develop their pedagogic skills and professional practice.

Reflective practice utilises a cycle of reflection–action–reflection in a continuous process of self-evaluation. It is a considered approach that promotes self-awareness and critical evaluation skills. Reflective practice might occur individually as a form of introspection or as part of a reflective conversation with others. The aim is to continually improve practice as part of the process of life-long learning

Health care students must develop reflective skills to develop as a competent practitioner. However even defining “reflection” can be problematic. Within the role of the NHS practitioner there has been an increased focus on self-reflection in the workplace and this has inevitably led to changes within the assessment process for pre-registration students. Regarding the assessment of students, it is important that reflection can be addressed appropriately and with some degree of objectivity by lecturers.

Refreshments will be provided.
