Event description

Description

The Presidents of Churches Together in England* encourage all churches in England to mark the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 with sensitivity as we acknowledge our unity in Christ. We have learnt over the past century that unity is achieved by walking together, and we have grown in communion, friendship, reconciliation and healing. During this anniversary we want to be able to listen to the truth that is in each other, to hear our different stories, and build bridges of deeper understanding and respect. This event in Blackburn Cathedral is an opportunity to do just that with keynote addesses from Fr John O'Toole, the National Ecumenical Officer for the Catholic Bishop's Conference in England Wales and Pastor George Samiec, Vice President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in England. Sharing with thoughts, hymns and prayers will be the Rt Revd Julian Henderson, Bishop of Blackburn, The Revd Paul Davis, Lancashire Methodist Chair, The Revd Andrew Mills, Moderator of the United Reformed Church NW Synod. There will be contributions from the NW Baptist Association, Lancashire Quakers and Christians from other independent free church movements. This will be the largest ecumenical gathering of Christians in the County of Lancashire for many years. You are invited to come and take you place in this visible symbol of our unity in Christ. Refreshments and time to meet and talk will take place after the service in the Crypt from 3.30pm with a report from chair and leaders of Churches Together in Lancashire.

* The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury), HE Cardinal Vincent Nichols (Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster), The Revd Dr Hugh Osgood (Free Churches Moderator), Bishop Eric Brown (Pentecostal President) and The Revd Canon Billy Kennedy (The President nominated by the New Churches, the Religious Society of Friends – ie the Quakers – and the Lutheran and German-speaking Churches).
