Event description
Learn what, why & how we produce nutrient-rich food from a regenerative organic system and ways to create future food resilience

About this Event

WHO THIS EVENT IS FOR:

  • Enlightened consumers wishing to learn more about production of nutritious food and food resilience
  • Curious farmers looking for practical insights into regenerative practices
  • Students researching sustainable and regenerative farming
  • Any open-minded person seeking information and solutions they won't find from conventional sources.

Smiling Tree Farm is a 70 acre holding snuggled in the hills on the Welsh Borders. We use regenerative organic, permaculture and holistic farm management practices to produce nutrient-rich food from perennial polyculture systems.

Combining and replicating forest systems with the natural role of migrating herbivores, the farm produces fruit, nuts and vegetables alongside meat and dairy in a self-sustaining, almost closed-loop, carbon-negative system that supports natural nutrient cycling and integrates re-wilded landscapes with food production.

The primary focus of the farm is improving soil health, fertility and function, through maximising carbon cycling and sequestration to grow soil, feed the soil food web and mobilise mineral availability to plants. Only from a healthy soil can healthy food be produced.

The day will be run by your host, Christine Page, combining presentations in the large, open cattle barn and an extensive tour of Smiling Tree Farm to see regenerative agriculture in practice.

The day will cover:

  • Our farm vision & what we do
  • What is regenerative organic agriculture?
  • An introduction to soil science & the carbon life-cycle
  • Tour & introduction to our holistic mob grazing pastures, silvopasture & how we are introducing forest systems & re-wilding with food production
  • An explanation and demonstration of Holistic Planned Grazing (mob grazing): mimicking the natural grazing patterns of migrating herbivores & how to implement this simple, effective grazing system
  • The critical importance of diversity for soil, plant, animal and human health as well as natural eco-systems
  • Trees for browsing, self-medication & fodder, as well as shade, shelter, water retention, nutrient-cycling & wildlife habitat
  • The link between soil health, flavour & increasing vital nutrients in our food
  • Cows, climate change & carbon sequestration
  • Animal welfare & how we produce ethical meat & milk
  • Practical advice & tips for those wishing to implement regenerative agriculture on any scale
  • Food resilience: how our global chemical-industrial food systems are unsustainable, polluting the planet and not solving world hunger, and what steps you can take to save and support vital local food sources and become more food resilient in future

This event will be repeated on 5 Sept, but we will not be holding any other courses in 2021. We will endeavour to answer as many questions and cover other course content as needed. So bring your note pad, pencil, list of questions and a packed lunch for a day of inspiration, walk and talk at Smiling Tree Farm.

Day runs: 11am arrivals for 11.30am start - finish 4pm

PPE: This is an educational event that will be held outside or in an unenclosed space, and from our risk assessment we believe the only protective gear you may need will be from the weather. However, as this event is planned in advance, please take responsibility to check current guidance at the time of the event and protect yourself as you feel appropriate.
