Maria-Rosa Cioni is an expert on near-infrared observations and studies of stellar populations in galaxies of the Local Group. She is the Principal Investigator of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system, a public survey project of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). After graduating in astronomy from the University of Bologna in 1996, she obtained her PhD degree in astronomy at the University of Leiden in 2001. She was an ESO fellow in Garching, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and a Reader at the University of Hertfordshire. At present, she is a joint Professor between the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam and the University of Potsdam. She is leading a research group funded by an ERC consolidator grant on the study of stellar populations of the Magellanic Clouds.

Angelo Valleriani graduated in Physics at the University of Bologna in 1992. After a PhD in Quantum Field Theory at SISSA Trieste in 1996, he moved to topics of applied statistical physics to biological processes. The research topics range from theoretical ecology and evolution, mathematical population genetics, computational neuroscience, models of gene expression. Since 2001 he heads the group "Stochastic Processes in Complex and Biological Systems" at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. The group employs a variety of methods including stochastic modeling, data analysis and statistics.
