The Reimagining Kinship Care Conference is presented by Grandparents Plus and Family Lives and will address the urgent need to focus attention on kinship care. The conference will be an opportunity to hear about new research and gain insights about young people in kinship care and kinship carers.

10:00 Welcome and opening speech

  • Anastasia de Waal (Family Lives)

  • Julie Wilkes (kinship carer)

10:10 Kinship Care: state of the nation

  • Dinithi Wijedasa, University of Bristol - Dinithi will present the latest research on the prevalence and characteristics of children in kinship care from the University of Bristol.

  • Lucy Peake, Grandparents Plus - Introduced by Janice Santos, a kinship carer who has been supported by the Relative Experience Programme. Lucy will then explore the results of Grandparents Plus’ 2017 Kinship Care: State of the Nation survey, and describe what’s been learnt through Relative Experience, our kinship carer support programme with Family Lives.

  • Professor Elaine Farmer, University of Bristol - Introduced by Danielle Jones, who was brought up in kinship care, Elaine will present Grandparents Plus’ Growing Up in Kinship Care research, which is the first study on outcomes for children in kinship care.

11:30 Keynote speakers

  • Robert Goodwill MP, Children and Families Minister (video presentation)

  • Emma Lewell Buck MP, Shadow Children and Families Minister


Please note there is a workshop session in the afternoon facilitated by UsCreates which will provoke and challenge current approaches to kinship care and encourage creative thinking about what kinship care could look like in future.
