Reducing remand is a national priority. In England and Wales, children on remand now make up 43% of the average custodial population, more than double what it was a decade ago. In South Tees, Youth Justice Services have led the way with innovative prevention, including a 79% reduction in first-time entrants compared to ten years ago. However, consistent with the national picture, remand rates for children in the area remain stubbornly high, with minoritised children disproportionately affected.
On the 6th November, we’re bringing together expert practitioners and system leaders, from across all of the key organisations that influence remand practice and decision-making in South Tees, for a day to imagine, design and connect towards a world where as many children as possible can be supported to live safely in their communities without being exposed to the harms of existing custodial environments.
This is not another event to restate the problems; this event is about identifying the most impactful locally actionable solutions that will benefit children and community safety in South Tees and co-producing clear action plans that will support us to make positive change.
Expect storytelling, dynamic dialogue between colleagues from partners and services in South Tees, and collaborative planning, where your insight, experience, and commitment will directly shape the way forward.
Book your tickets by September 30th.
