Event description

Description

In 1947, the Russian émigré nun, Joanna Reitlinger was commissioned by the Anglican-Russian Orthodox Fellowship of St Sergius and St Alban to paint frescos for the joint Chapel at St Basil’s House, Ladbroke Grove. Historical circumstances are such that the subject matter, materials, technique and style of painting adopted by Sr Joanna are historically unique and theologically fascinating. After over a decade in storage, the frescos are now back in parish use in Northampton. This weekend seminar has been organized to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Fellowship, and to further scholarly activity regarding Sr Joanna and the circumstances of her art and theology.

Further presentations/papers on the subject matter of the frescos and fine art of the 1930s & 40s are invited, with a view to publishing an edited and illustrated book. Please email Fr Timothy at tim.curtis@northampton.ac.uk
