Session 7: Configurations of Self – Do I Really Know Me?

Another dive into theory and a consideration of how it links to practice. This time, we are looking at configurations of self and exploring the development of the notion over time. We will look at the work of Mearns and Thorne and how they conceptualised something approaching the plural self; different ‘me-s’ in different places or even moments. We can then think about how, if the theory makes sense to us, this impacts the phenomenological stance we take as a person-centred therapist.

Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event

  • A greater knowledge concerning the concept of configurations of self.
  • How our ‘different’ selves may reflect the impact of the cultural and personal contexts we have and are experiencing.
  • To be able to reflect on the moment-to-moment being of both ourselves and our client (the phenomenological stance).

Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?

  • For those people training or interested in the person-centred approach, from early career therapists to those of us a bit longer in the tooth.

How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?

  • This exploration may help us stay with the moment-to-moment experiencing of our client(s).
