Description

About the course

This session will explore the academic disciplines that underpin RE, such as theology, philosophy, and the study of religion, and consider how these emerge on the curriculum. Delegates will become empowered with an understanding of disciplinary knowledge and the way it shapes strong teaching practice in RE.

This session will additionally explore the counter-intuitive thesis that the school curriculum is enhanced (not weakened) and that pupil attainment is, in fact, raised through developing the rigorous study of religion and philosophy.

This course will explore the extrinsic value of religious education and how it can improve outcomes for pupils, in GCSE English literature, for example, together with the intrinsic value of the study of religion in the curriculum.

Who should attend?

Curriculum leaders and heads of department with responsibility for religious education who are non-specialists; teachers of other disciplines who want a thorough induction to knowledge-rich RE, trainees, SLT with responsibility for line-managing RE departments.

The tutor

Dr Richard Kueh is subject specialist leader for religion and philosophy at the Inspiration Trust. A qualified RE teacher and former head of department, Richard has shaped his practice in both the state and independent sectors. Most recently, he formed part of the curriculum and pastoral leadership team who launched a new free school in Cambridgeshire.

Richard wrote his doctoral thesis on the philosophy of Hans-Georg Gadamer. He has written on the rationale for religious education and RE's curriculum knowledge problem. A leading researcher-practitioner, Richard has been Fellow and Scholar of the Farmington Institute at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.
