Remaking Post-Industrial Cities

Thursday 4th October 2018

1.00pm- 2.00pm

8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ

What does it take to restore industrial cities following the collapse of big industry?

Don Carter is an architect, urban designer and developer of international renown. He is currently Director of Urban Design and Regional Engagement at the Remaking Cities Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. Previously, he was President of Urban Design Associates in Pittsburgh where over thirty-six years he led many of the firm’s most complex projects, as the city emerged from the precipitous collapse of big industry in the 1980s.

His newest book is Remaking Post-Industrial Cities: Lessons from North America and Europe, documenting ten case studies and common themes from the international Remaking Cities Congress he co-chaired in Pittsburgh.

At the RSA, Don will share the lessons learned from his studies of post-industrial transformation from both sides of the Atlantic, highlighting issues he has found to be critical to the resilience of post-industrial cities and communities in the US and the UK, including: sustainability; doing more with less; public engagement; and social, economic and environmental equity.

Speaker: Donald K. Carter, Director of Urban Design and Regional Engagement, Remaking Cities Institute, Carnegie Mellon University.

Chair: Jamie Cooke, Head of RSA Scotland.
