Description

Remembering 1919 and the ‘Race riots’ in Liverpool

With Dr Andrew Davies

For the last 5 years, there have been a number of projects taking place in Liverpool which have attempted to rekindle community knowledge of the 'Race riots' of the summer of 1919. This talk will discuss the events of 1919, many of which happened incredibly close to the venue, but will also use the experiences of project leaders Dr Andy Davies (University of Liverpool), Madeline Heneghan (Co-director, Writing on the Wall), and project volunteers Janaya Pickett and Vicki Caren to discuss some of the project events. We will particularly focus on the experience of running a walking tour which traces the route taken by Charles Wotten, the Bermudan sailor killed during the riots, and how the public have reacted to this event.
