This event will celebrate the life, work and legacy of Errol Lawrence, the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS, University of Birmingham) graduate who went on to forge a career in social housing through leading, teaching and working with community activists and organisations for many decades primarily across north London. This event will be of interest to all who are writing, creating and working on the politics of housing and its effects upon communities in societies today.
We intend for the event to be an informal affair, to bring together family and friends who knew Errol Lawrence and the generations of organisers, writers, and students who have been inspired by his important essays, ‘Just plain common sense: the ‘roots’ of racism’ (Lawrence, 1982) and ‘In the abundance of water the fool is thirsty: sociology and black ‘pathology’ (Lawrence, 1982), which featured in the celebrated CCCS anthology, ‘The Empire Strikes Back: Race and Racism in 70s Britain’.
Note: This is an in-person only event.
This event is supported by the Sarah Remond Parker Centre, UCL and the Stuart Hall Archive Project, University of Birmingham
