Event description

Description

This year Clerkenwell & Islington Guides’ Association, the Mayor of Islington’s official tour guides celebrates 30 years of bringing the history of the borough to life. To mark this milestone and to launch our new name, Islington Guided Walks we are putting on a special guided walk to help the Mayor’s charities for this year.

The charities are Freightliners and CARIS. There is no charge for the guided walk but donations are welcome on the day.

To find out more about CARIS visit www.carisislington.org

To find out more about Freightliners visit www.freightlinersfarm.org.uk

In addition to our own 30th anniversary the walk highlights 2018’s many other anniversaries including 200 years since the completion of the Islington tunnel on the Regent’s Canal and 100 years since the end of WWI and some women won the vote.

Discover memorials on the streets where they lived, to those who gave their lives in WWI; one of London’s oldest pub theatres and the balcony where Meryl Streep, playing Emmeline Pankhurst gave that rousing speech in the film “Suffragette”.

Meet the man who lived long enough to unveil his own Islington heritage plaque, the 4foot 11inch leader of the Suffragettes’ Bodyguard known as the “Jiujitzu suffragette” and see the pub where the notorious Hatton Garden heist was planned by a gang of senior citizens.

This will be a fun way to learn more about the fantastic work of two of Islington’s charities while enjoying the local history of the Angel.
