Remembering Old Ireland by Bernard Canavan
Wed 16 March 2016, 19:00 – 22:00 GMT
We invite you to launch Bernard Canavan’s latest exhibition ‘Remembering Old Ireland’ at the London Irish Centre, on the 16th March 2016, 7pm.
This collection captures the social change in Ireland, from the place emigrants to London remember to the place it is today. As part of the post war exodus when some 800,000 left Ireland between 1945 and 1965, Bernard exhibition explores the political and social topics that impact this.
Bernard Canavan is a well know painter of Irish emigration, having had exhibitions in Ireland, Britain and internationally. He was an emigrant himself in his teens from County Longford, working in factories building building sites, but became an illustrator in London in the 60s for many of the underground press, and in the 1970s got a scholarship to University. For the next forty years he taught Irish, British and European history with a particular interest in the Enlightenment period, in many London colleges and institutes. He has paintings in many Irish and British collections.
All paintings will be available to buy.
