Removed from the Forest: Lessons in Integral Ecology

Join us for the second lecture in our Laudato Si’ Series with Fr Christophere Ngolele SJ, an anthropologist completing his PhD in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at SOAS.

This session explores the experiences of the autochthonous peoples of the Congo, communities displaced from their forest home through interventions by government, the forestry industry, and conservation projects.

Their story offers a striking insight into what Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ calls the “technocratic paradigm” — a way of relating to the world that prioritises control and consumption over care and connection.

Fr Christopher will invite us to consider what this displacement reveals about the loss of integral ecology and how theology and anthropology together can help us imagine a more just relationship with creation.
