Event description

Description

This special lecture features highlights from two major 2017 exhibitions: one devoted to Raphael's drawings, at the
Ashmolean this summer, and the exhibition of portrait drawings from Leonardo to Rembrandt at the National Portrait Gallery until 22 October.

It will examine the different forms and functions taken by drawing and show how it served Renaissance
artists. From contract specifications and records of things seen, through developmental images bringing these aspects together, to a finished project ready to be created, drawing was essential. It came to be seen as the best embodiment of the artist's inspiration and unique talent. As well as works from the exhibitions,
the lecture will also enable us to enjoy examples of the best drawings from Europein the 15th and 16th centuries.

Art historian RichardStemp is a well-known lecturer, author and TV presenter; we are delighted to
welcome him back following his previous lecture to us on Rembrandt.
