Description

For students at schools throughout South Wales, Renishaw's education outreach workshops provide an exciting hands-on experience of real-world engineering. For teachers, they offer an ideal opportunity to pro-actively engage classes in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

Held at our state-of-the-art Fabrication Development Centre (FDC) in Miskin, our half-day and full-day workshops are completely FREE and can even be tailored to meet the needs of individual school curricula.

With strong core curriculum links, the workshops offer a range of different engineering STEM oriented activities including:

Considering a career in engineering

  • An introduction to engineering at Renishaw

  • Just 12% women in engineering

  • A day in the life of a Renishaw apprentice


3D printing and Computer Aided Design (CAD) workshops

  • 3D printing and introduction to computer aided design (KS 2 & 3)

  • 3D printing and advanced computer aided design (KS 4 & 5)

  • Autodesk Fusion 360 training for GCSE & A Level classes


Electronics workshops

  • Design and build basic electronic circuits (KS 2)

  • Electronics and soldering a LED desk lamp (KS 3)

  • Electronics and soldering a RGB light sequencer (KS 4)


Engineering workshops

  • Design & Make a marble maze game (KS 2)

  • Design & Make an acrylic laser cut game (KS 3)

  • Prototype and modelling workshops for GCSE and A Level course work (KS 4 & 5)


Coding and software workshops

  • Coding with Visual Blocks using the BBC:microbit and line following buggy (KS 2)

  • Coding with Python and Java script using the BBC:microbit and the :MOVE mini buggy (KS 3)

  • Advanced visual coding in Python using our L.E.D. wall (KS 4 & 5)


Science workshops - Superstar CREST awards

  • Band Rollers - investigating elastic, energy, motion, distance and friction (KS 2)

  • Bridge Blunder - investigating construction, weights, masses, suspension and support (KS 2)

  • Polymer Problems - investigating polymers, plastics, chains, molecules and durability (KS 2)

  • Racing Rockets - investigating aerodynamics, flight, friction and rocket design (KS 2)

IF YOU INTEND TO BRING 24 PUPILS OR LESS PLEASE CHOOSE ONLY 1 WORKSHOP ON THE REGISTRATION PAGE.

IF YOU INTEND TO BRING 30 PUPILS PLEASE CHOOSE 2 WORKSHOPS FROM THE LIST OF OPTIONS ON THE REGISTRATION PAGE

Groups of 30 pupils will be split into two groups of 15, they will change over half way through the day so both groups take part in the workshops.

We only accept pupils from year 5 upwards at our facility - the workshop area is not suitable for pupils below this school year.

Maximum class size per visit is 30 pupils - Multiple visits can be booked.

Groups MUST be accompanied by 2 teachers when visiting the Renishaw site.


PUPILS MUST BRING A PACKED LUNCH - NO FACILITIES ON SITE TO PURCHASE FOOD


Timings for the day (can be adjusted to suit your school day)

10.00am to 10.05am - Schools arrives at Renishaw

10.05am to 10.15am - Welcome presentation to Renishaw

10.15am to 11.15am - Workshop session 1 begins

11.15am to 11.30am - Break for squash and biscuits

11.30am to 12.30pm - Workshop session 2 begins

12.30pm to 1.00pm - Lunch (please bring packed lunch)

1.00pm to 2.00pm - Tour of manufacturing facility

2.00pm to 2.15pm - Collect feedback from the visit / Careers at Renishaw

2.15pm to 2.20pm - School departs Renishaw
