Overview

Innovating Data for Humanitarian Action: Integrating Traditional and Digital Trace Data to Monitor Displacement

About the Event

Internal displacement remains one of the most pressing global challenges of our time. According to the newly released Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025 (IDMC, 2025), an unprecedented 83.4 million people were living in internal displacement at the end of 2024. This scale of movement underscores the urgent need for innovative, data-driven tools to track, understand, and respond to displacement more effectively.

This webinar marks the launch of the report Dynamic Estimates of Displacement in Disaster Regions: A Policy-driven framework triangulating data, a collaboration between the Geographic Data Science Lab at the University of Liverpool and the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM).

The report examines how traditional humanitarian data systems—while essential—can be strengthened through the integration of emerging digital trace data, such as mobile phone GPS and social media activity, to build a more comprehensive and real-time understanding of displacement.

What to Expect

Join us as we present the key findings from this report.

The session will include:

  • A scalable framework for data triangulation with recommendations — outlining how to integrate multiple data sources to improve humanitarian decision-making.
  • Case studies from Ukraine and Pakistan — exploring how digital trace data were used to track displacement following conflict and climate-induced natural hazards.
  • Panel discussion and Q&A with experts from IOM-DTM, Snowflake and the University of Liverpool.

Speakers

  • Dr Elisabetta Pietrostefani – Lecturer in Geographic Data Science and Deputy Lead of the Geographic Data Science Lab, University of Liverpool
  • Robert Trigwell – Senior DTM Coordination Officer, Internal Organization for Migration (IOM)
  • Speaker from Snowflake (TBC)
  • Professor Francisco Rowe – Professor in Population Data Science and Lead of the Geographic Data Science Lab, University of Liverpool
