Report launch: High rise housing as sustainable urban intensification?
Event Information
About this Event
Summary
Over the last ten years, high-rise housing developments have cropped up in cities across the UK, especially London and Manchester.
The vertical reconfiguration of urban form in this way is emerging as one of numerous ways to increase and intensify the supply of housing.
Yet, high-rise housing can have profound and potentially long-term socio-spatial implications for residents and surrounding neighbourhoods. Moreover, as demonstrated tragically by Grenfell, there are concerns about the long-term safety, security and maintenance of high-rise building.
This new report from the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE) explores these issues, among others. Reviewing the international evidence base, it addresses the following questions:
- What factors are driving the proliferation of high rise developments?
- What are the characteristics of high-rise developments in terms of density, unit size and the socio-demographics of those residing in them? And what effect do they have on social cohesion, crime, etc.?
- How sustainable is this housing typology and how should policymakers and practitioners respond to high rise developments both today and in the future?
Join us for this webinar where we will be launching the report and discussing these issues with an international panel of experts.
