Event description

Description

Part of Repowering Britain, a series of events organised by the Labour Energy Forum in collaboration with Platform London, for the 2017 Labour Conference fringe.

With Lisa Nandy MP, Clive Lewis MP, David Babbs (Executive Director – 38 Degrees), David Wearing, Rowenna Davis (tbc), Jane Trowell (Platform), Faiza Shaheen (CLASS).

What is a left narrative of Englishness? Can Labour tell a radical and leftist story of what it means to be English, without resorting to xenophobic and militarist cliches?

More and more residents in England have described being ‘English’ as the main or an important part of their identity - made more acute in a context of devolution and Brexit.

Labour finds it easier to communicate about British identity - but struggles to articulate a progressive vision on what it means to be English in the 21st century. But instead of triangulating our appeals to voters and reinforcing rightwing values, can we reimagine and build a more inclusive England, with all the difficult conversations that this will necessarily involve?

Repowering Britain is a space for bold left visions for a transformed economy, society and energy system. We will bring together thinkers and doers from across the Labour Party and trade union movement to discuss what our country should look like in 10, 20, 30 years. The Party’s manifesto has inspired millions. We will build on that to envision a reindustrialised and democratised economy that addresses the climate crisis and hands back control. Click here for the full programme of events.
