Representation and Calculation in Secondary Mathematics
Thu 13 July 2017, 09:30 – 15:00 BST
This session aims to enhance teacher’s pedagogy and practice through investigating how manipulatives can be used alongside written methods, to encourage students to make sense of abstract concepts in mathematics.
Participants will be encouraged to explore a range of practical equipment (such as Cuisenaire Rods, Base 10, interlocking cubes) to promote learning through modelling, to support the development of students’ conceptual understanding. You will leave with a resource to trial back at school, and will be asked to provide an evaluation of how this has worked in your classroom.
This is a free to attend CPD opportunity open to Secondary Teachers of Mathematics, and Curriculum Leaders, working in schools in the Northumberland, Tyne, Wear and Durham.
Participants are expected to complete a short pre course questionnaire, and another reflection a month after the session.
Refreshments are provided, and there is plenty of free parking at the Gosforth Marriott.
Please Note: To ensure that funding is used effectviely, cancellations within 1 week of the course date, non-attendance or failure to return the evaluations, will be charged at £40 per person, invoiced to the school.
