A virtual interdisciplinary symposium exploring the repurposing of objects, knowledge and narratives.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we plan to REPURPOSE our conference to an online platform. We are committed to producing an interesting and informative event and are excited to explore a new innovative way to deliver our programme to you.
The REPURPOSED: Reclaiming Past Objects, Knowledge, and Narratives virtual interdisciplinary symposium will go live 9 am Tuesday 19th May 2020.
We encourage our visitors to participate in our question and answer session which will be open Tuesday 19th, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st within the comment section of each panel page. The presenters will regularly review this forum and answer any question over this three-day period.

Programme:
The Keynote speaker is Juli Bolaños-Durman, an emerging Costa Rican artist & designer with a background in graphic design, mixed-media and glass material. Her creative process and research revolves around repurposing found objects and transforming them into precious artefacts that tell a sorry. Her keynote video presentation, entitled "Magical World of Second Chances: Where Waste Material is the Starting Point”, will be focused on discarded glass and the process of reconfiguring elements through play and embellishment.

About this Event
‘Out with the old, in with the new’ – a familiar sentiment in a consumer-driven society; one that implies that to move forward we must first rid ourselves of the past. But, what if we are to re-examine the ‘old’? By shining a new light, we might reveal hidden narratives, renew stale interpretations, and challenge preconceived ideas, thus contributing to a wider consideration of issues as wide-ranging as sustainability, value, and ideas of reclamation.
This one-day event hosted by the MRes Research Development group at Northumbria University, Newcastle, brings together postgraduate students for an interdisciplinary symposium offering a unique evaluation of Repurposing objects, knowledge, and narratives.
Reclaiming Objects
Waste not, want not. Fast fashion or slow fashion. To repair or discard. The obsession with the new in a society that doesn’t know what to do with the end of life for people and things. The places we make. The spaces we inhabit. Sustained.
Reclaiming Knowledge
The know-how. The knack. The hands-on knowledge. Grey matter. The head over the hand. The give and take of information. The share or steal of expertise. The teacher and the learner. To lecture at or to discover together.
Reclaiming Narratives
Powerful characters. Invisible actors. Forgotten stories. Interpreted. Misinterpreted. Characters reborn in new guise. Traverse the ages. Cross the generations. Problematic agents. Illegal activity. Subversive actions. The sidelined players. The accepted conclusion.
Our interdisciplinary conference REPURPOSED: Reclaiming Past Objects, Knowledge, and Narratives, embarks on a journey to ask these questions and challenge these themes. With an array of contributions from different fields of study and disciplines spanning history, queer studies, media, literature, education, craft and design, we hope to facilitate conversations around the ways in which we repurpose.
