Description

TOWN HALL AT 12:00, ARTS TWO LECTURE THEATRE, & LUNCH AT 13:00 , ARTS TWO FOYER - 11 MAY 2018. EVENT RESCHEDULED TO MAXIMISE THE NUMBER OF ATTENDEES

Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware Queen Mary has now joined the Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and Artificial Intelligence, as a university partner. The Institute was founded by Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick. We will also be working alongside other new members, Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Southampton. This represents a £5M investment for the University and it presents us with a major opportunity to take a leading role in this high profile national initiative.

Data science will play an increasingly important role in modern life and, as a result of this exciting new partnership, we will be building significantly upon our world leading research activity in the field. Some of the research themes currently being explored include computational statistics, logic for data science, machine learning, mathematical and computational modelling of complex systems, knowledge representation, and operations research, high dimensional statistics, artificial intelligence for data analytics, and also national cyber security.

In order to find out more about the institute, and the ways that staff can get involved, QMUL staff are invited to a town hall discussion at 12:00 with Sir Alan Wilson, CEO at The Alan Turing Institute. In this talk, Sir Alan will present examples of the exciting research already being developed at the Institute and share plans and ambitions for the future.

Sir Alan has been CEO at the Institute since October 2016. He is a mathematician specialising in urban analytics and he is Professor of Urban and Regional Systems in the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL. He is also Chair of the Home Office Science Advisory Council and Chair of the Lead Expert Group of the Government Office for Science Foresight project on the Future of Cities.

Staff are invited to discover more about the Institute's influential data science research with other senior colleagues from the Institute over a buffet lunch in the foyer of Arts Two from 13:00. This networking event is designed to bring together staff who work across the data sciences, as part of a new research institute: the Institute of Applied Data Sciences, which will lead on our engagements with the Turing Institute.

Please note the Town Hall session will be recorded
