Fri 28 April 2017, 09:30 – 12:30 BST
Being a firefighter is immensely rewarding - you not only respond to emergencies, but work hard to prevent them happening in the first place, saving lives and putting our community first.
Firefighter recruitment is always competitive and we expect a large number of applicants when we begin our recruitment process this year. This is your opportunity to come and find out more about the role of the firefighter and the recruitment process.
This isn’t a job for just anyone but you may be surprised to find out that you are just who we’re looking for. As a firefighter you will spend a lot of time out in the community conducting home safety visits, visiting businesses and talking to people of various ages and from different backgrounds about fire prevention, road safety and other safety messages. You will also be involved in open days and other events, encouraging people to think again about how they can make their homes and businesses safer.
Firefighters need a combination of physical strength and stamina, strength of character and compassion. Also important is confidence; resilience; an ability to communicate effectively and a commitment to equality and diversity. On our Taster Session you will have the opportunity to find out more about:
The recruitment process
Fitness Standards and preparing for the tests
Our purpose and commitments
At these events, there will be an opportunity to try a couple of the physical tests, identify and get advice on fitness, learn about our community engagement work, understand our recruitment process and speak to some of our firefighters. This is a programmed event, so please arrive plenty of time enabling the session to start promptly.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to attend these events?
Yes you will need to be at least 17 and a half years old - there is no upper age limit. To be a firefighter you will need to be eligible to work in the UK and hold a valid UK driving licence.
What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
There is no public transport to the site, although Public Transport is available to Uckfield, which is the nearest town approximately 5 minutes away by car.
Do I have to live in the county of East Sussex or City of Brighton and Hove to apply for the role of Wholetime Firefighter with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service?
We have restricted applications to being within 10 km of the border of East Sussex and Brighton and Hove, a map of this area is available on our website
What should I wear?
You will have the option to do some physical activities, so we suggest you wear "active wear" if you would like to do these activities, there are changing facilities and showers available on site. Trainers are recommended and any task specific Personal Protective Equipment will provided.
If you would just like to come and talk to existing firefighters, find out about the process and learn more then there is no dress code.
Do I have to be fit?
The role of a firefighter requires a minimum fitness which we can identify and support with you. The activities on the taster session can only be undertaken by those who formally confirm they are active on a regular basis.
Where do I go when I get there?
On arrival make your way to Reception where you will be met by a member of our team.
