Event description

Description

What are the sources of Roman Catholic Mariology? Is Mary in fact special in the Bible? Is the Virgin related in any way to Eve, the ark of the covenant, Rachel, the Queen Mother of the Old Testament, or Jesus' empty tomb? Alongside its roots in popular piety, Roman Catholics have pointed to Holy Scripture as a principal source for their teachings. This day commends a careful, critical and clear orientation to the role of Mary in Scripture, exploring select biblical themes regarding Mary and the Church while noting the illegitimacy of the "leap" made from Scripture to Roman Catholic dogma.

Revd Dr Mark Garcia is President of Greystone Theological Institute in Pennsylvania and Pastor of Immanuel Orthodox Presbyterian Church (Coraopolis, PA). He has been a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge and is currently adjunct professor at Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (Pittsburgh, PA), and Trinity School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA). He is the author of Life in Christ: Union with Christ and Twofold Grace in Calvin’s Theology (Paternoster, 2008), and many journal articles and essays. He is currently researching ‘the theological ontology of the feminine in relation to the biblical divorce and household texts’. He is Director of Greystone's Lydia Center for Women and Families and dedicates much of his labours to issues of gender, domestic violence, and the use and abuse of church power.
