Event description

Description

Research Across Campus is a networking event where postgraduate researchers from different disciplines get together to present their research (or an aspect of their research e.g. methodology or analysis) in an interdisciplinary and supportive environment. The event includes 15-minute presentations, followed by informal discussions over lunch and refreshments. If you have an important conference coming up and you want to practise your presentation to get constructive feedback or you would like to just share your research with the wider PGR community and meet other postgraduate researchers, then do not miss this opportunity.

Lunch and refreshments included.

Presentations on 11 April:

Presenter 1: Amy Walker, Doctoral Researcher in Human Geography

Title:

“The most significant thing about my dad's was the lack of things”: Exploring the Materialities of Children and Young People’s Homemaking in Post-Separation Families

This presentation will explore the childhood experiences of young adults with separated parents, who spent time within more than one parental homes. It will examine the ways in which a sense of ‘home’ was (or was not) created within their two households; specifically focusing on the effects of the physical architecture of their houses and their material contents.

Presenter 2: Mukile (Junior) Kasongo, Doctoral Researcher in Translation Studies

Title:

A Womanist Novel under Soviet Eyes: A case study of the Russian Translation of Mariama Bâ’s So Long a Letter

My presentation uses the Russian translation of a feminist novel by Mariama Bâ (a postcolonial writer) to explore questions around agency and voice and it aims to reveal what happens to the francophone African voice of femininity when this aspect is translated into Russian during the Soviet Union.

If you would like to be one of our speakers, please contact Dr. Eren Bilgen (f.erenbilgen@bham.ac.uk) to be included in this year’s programme.
